What is Prosthodontics?

Prosthodontics is the area of specialist dentistry that looks to re-build natural teeth or replace missing teeth with prosthetic options including dentures, bridges, crowns and dental implants.

Patients from Market Rasen, Gainsborough, Sudbrooke, Fiskerton, Reepham, Cherry Willingham, Nettleham, Welton, Caistor and Keelby and throughout Lincolnshire are choosing to get treatment at Wolds Dental Studio because of our expert team of prosthodontists.

What are the Prosthodontics treatments available ?

At Wolds Dental Studio in Market Rasen, we have several options to re-build teeth or replace missing teeth which are:

Fixed prosthodontics

Fixed prosthodontics are restorations such as crowns, bridges, onlays and inlays which are custom made and fixed into your mouth. They can only be removed by a prosthodontist. These restorations can be used to restore a single damaged tooth with a crown through to restoring gaps between natural teeth with a bridge.

At Wolds Dental Studio in Market Rasen we can take detailed images of your teeth using CBCT (Cone Beam CT) scan which avoids the need for messy dental impressions. These images are used to build your custom-made restorations.

Removable prosthodontics

This form of removable prosthodontics is also known as dentures. Dentures look to replace the soft tissue as well as the teeth. We offer patients the choice of complete dentures to replace a full arch of teeth or partial dentures for perhaps just a few missing teeth.

Dental implants

Dental implants are the permanent replacement of teeth. They use a titanium metal rod which is attached to your jawbone to act as the new tooth root, this is then attached to a replacement tooth known as a crown.

Maxillofacial prosthodontics

This form of prosthodontics is used for those patients who have a congenial defect such as a cleft lip or palate. It can also help those patients who have had an illness such as cancer to the mouth or suffered a stroke. Maxillofacial prosthodontics include palatal lifts and speech bulbs.

Frequently Asked Questions about Prosthodontics

How long should fixed restorations last?

This is difficult to predict as each patient is different and will have differences in their level of oral hygiene, bite, chew etc. As an average, fixed restorations such as crowns and bridges should last for 10-12 years.

Which prosthodontic treatment should I have?

It is impossible to say without seeing you first and examining your teeth. The answer will depend upon several factors such as the health of your teeth. Do you have gaps or just one tooth that needs to be re-built? We will also need to look at the health of your gums and jawbone and talk to you about your lifestyle and your budget.

How is a prosthodontist different to a usual dentist?

A prosthodontist has completed a further 3 years of training after the usual dentistry training to specialise in prosthodontics. A prosthodontist has extra qualifications and specialist knowledge to advise and treat you for the re-building of teeth and the replacement of missing teeth.
